WHAT IS HYPEROXIC TRAINING?

Most people have a hard time increasing the intensity of their training while at altitude. At high altitude the lower barometric pressure of the atmosphere means that each breath contains less oxygen than it would at sea level. As a result, athletes must rely more on anaerobic metabolism, and the lactic acid that builds up in the muscles causes them to fatigue more quickly.
Hyperoxic training bypasses these difficulties by increasing the oxygen taken in with each breath. The mask worn by the athlete connects to a chamber with a mixture of room air and pure oxygen. Inside the chamber the oxygen percentage reaches 50% instead of the usual 21% found in the atmosphere.
The higher percentage of oxygen raises the lactate threshold in the muscles and allows higher intensity training. Over a period of several weeks, increased workout intensity produces physiological adaptations which develop an athlete’s acceleration speed, increase the VO2 max, and augment power and endurance at both sea level and altitude competitions.
For endurance athletes, both runners and bikers, hyperoxic training protocols would involve long intervals at the athlete’s lactate threshold. This type of training would increase the power threshold and train the muscle to recruit a higher percentage of muscle fibers than it usually would at a given power.
Sprinters using hyperoxic training reap the most benefit from short intervals in their anaerobic zone. With the higher levels of oxygen, an athlete will be able to use a higher percentage of the muscle and push harder without building up lactic acid. Over time, this raises the lactate threshold and teaches the muscles to use more of their mass when contracting.
For other sports, such as cyclocross, athletes rely on both anaerobic power (sprinting) and aerobic endurance. Hyperoxic training would allow improvement in both of these areas through a combination of intervals at the lactate threshold as well as far into the anaerobic zone. The results of this type of training would include increased power for acceleration, better endurance, and more effectively trained muscles.
ATHLETE TESTIMONIALS
“Hyperoxic training was key for me last year. Living at altitude, you can’t achieve the same power as athletes training at sea level, but hyperoxic training allows you to get that extra edge that is so important on race day. It worked so well, I almost don’t want to tell my competition about it!“
-Shonny Vanlandingham, Professional triathlete
2010 XTERRA World Champion
2010 XTERRA U.S. National Champion
2009 XTERRA National Champion
“I’ve been training and racing my whole life, and I’ve never found something so simple, yet so effective. I’d recommend hyperoxic training to everyone from master’s athletes to college athletes, as well as all those in between.”
-Martha Iverson, Master’s cyclist
Reigning Cyclocross Master’s National Champion
9 time USAC Master’s National Champion
Former UCI Master’s World Champion
“The effects of hyperoxic training have really impressed me. It’s great to live high and be acclimatized, but hyperoxic presents the opportunity for higher intensity workouts. It has definitely become an integral part of my training regimen."
-Todd Wells, Professional mountain biker and cyclocross rider; Member of 2004 Olympic team
2010 Cyclocross National Champion
2010 Mountain Bike Short Track National Champion
2010 Mountain Bike Cross Country National Champion
